For most of us, the month of June could mean school holidays, or it could mean that we are a month away from the middle of the year. In the skincare world though, June is a time where we celebrate Acne Awareness Month.
It’s a month-long awareness campaign initiative aimed at educating people about what exactly is acne, what causes it, the various types of acne, as well as the various treatment options available. Given that acne affects many of us, it’s important that we are part of a community that serves to spread knowledge, reduce stigma and provide support to those who need it most. After all, acne is not just a teenage problem; it affects individuals of all ages, and understanding its complexities is key to effective management.
Being experts at all things skincare, My Cozy Room surely knows more than a thing or two about acne. In our 14 years in the industry, we’ve seen acne come in many forms in the many customers we’ve treated, and we’ve managed to come up with novel treatments and solutions that have left them more satisfied than they could’ve imagined.
What exactly is acne?
While we may be struggling with acne, it doesn’t mean we actually know how it comes to me. To sum things up, acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This blockage can lead to whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and, in severe cases, cysts or nodules. Typically, acne appears on the face, forehead and upper back where your sebaceous glands are most abundant.
What causes acne?
To explain things from a biology POV, the core bacterium associated with acne is Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes), formerly known as Propionibacterium acnes. The oily environment where our sebaceous glands are kicked into overdrive and most active provides the perfect condition for this bacterium to thrive.
Within our skin and blocked hair follicles, this bacterium multiplies and triggers inflammation, leading to the red, swollen pimples characteristic of inflammatory acne.
What are the different types of acne?
Depending on the environment and chemical conditions of your skin, acne will be manifested in different forms. Here are the most common ones:
1. Non-Inflammatory Acne
Speaking of non-inflammatory acne, we’re talking about your blackheads and whiteheads. Blackheads are open comedones that appear black due to oxidation, while whiteheads are closed comedones that remain under the skin’s surface, appearing as small, flesh-colored bumps.
While these may seem innocent and incapable of causing much pain, it can snowball into something worse if you don’t take good enough care of your skin. It could eventually develop into more severe forms of acne, which by then, you’ll probably need to go for a good extraction facial, such as My Cozy Room’s Ultimate Pore Extraction Facial, in order to get rid of them from your skin.
Our Ultimate Pore Extraction Facial has won many awards, and is touted as one of the best extraction facial treatments in Singapore. There’s many reasons why – this treatment has solved the acne issues of many of our customers.
Jenny’s Acne Journey
Take Jenny – she has been struggling with combination skin for a long time, with many whiteheads and blackheads accumulated all over her face. After trying many skincare products, her encounter with the Ultimate Pore Extraction Facial was the one. It removed all of her blackheads, whiteheads and other non-inflammatory acne around her skin, making her skin a whole lot more radiant and healthier-looking.
“I am so glad my skin doesn’t face a sudden outbreak anymore.” Jenny
2. Inflammatory Acne
As the name suggests, inflammatory acne appears to be more sinister and painful. They consists of:
- Papules: Small, red, tender bumps caused by inflamed or infected hair follicles.
- Pustules: Pimples containing pus, appearing as red circles with white or yellow centers.
- Nodules: Large, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin.
- Cysts: Deep, painful, pus-filled lesions that can cause scarring.
While each type of inflammatory acne has its own set of properties, it can be hard to distinguish between them unless you’re a skincare professional. That said, if the acne on your face is red, inflamed and giving you pain, it’s a clear sign that you should take action promptly.
Lin’s Acne Journey
At My Cozy Room, we have the right skill sets and methods to target stubborn acne in a safe and non-scarring manner. Having been struggling with cystic acne since she was 14 years old, Lin only arrived at a solution with our Ultimate Pore Extraction Facial, as well as our BeKind Clear Skin Elixir, which managed to drastically improve her acne situation in a short period of time effectively.
“Just when I thought I have to accept acne for the rest of my life, I found the way to heal my skin.” Lin
3. Teenage acne
As much as it’s a struggle, many people can attest that having frequent breakouts as a teen is a rite of passage in our formative years. As such, teenage acne is common during puberty due to dynamic hormonal changes that increase oil production.
Similarly, adults past puberty are not immune from adult acne, which is also caused by hormonal fluctuations, stress, or underlying health conditions.
Dallas’ Acne Journey
“Dallas’ acne has been challenging especially for his age, his skin was so clogged all the time. After going for the facial extraction treatment, we were both so happy to see the significant glow and radiance on his face again. ” Erika (Dallas’ mum)
4. Back acne (bacne):
More commonly found in guys, back acne appears, as you may have guessed, on the back. It is often triggered by sweat, tight clothing, and lack of proper cleansing. Bacne can be both inflammatory and non-inflammatory, presenting as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts.
Qi Le’s Acne Journey
Having struggled with bacne for a long time, QiLe from WahSoShiok, a popular male-centric lifestyle publication in Singapore, has been looking for a solution. Noticing that his experiences at aesthetic clinics, which use a lot of technology and invasive methods, are not working out, he reached out to My Cozy Room for their Ultimate Diamond Bacial. The treatment effectively removed most of his bacne, as well as lightened his scars and hyperpigmentation areas, making it the key to solving his bacne condition.
“My back acne has been with me since young and most of it has turned into deep scars. I am so glad to have found out that extraction facials can also be done so effectively and comfortably on the back! It’s the first time I feel great again showing off my back.” Qi Le (founder of WahSoShiok!)
